WXIA-TV Names Joe Seidel Class Act Teacher

Joe Seidel, First Montessori School of Atlanta's music teacher and director of parent relations, has been named a WXIA-TV Class Act Teacher. The station selects roughly 35 teachers each year from more than 300 nominations. Honorees are chosen based on various criteria, including love of teaching, knowledge of the subject, empathy, positive attitude and ability to meet the needs of individual students.

Seidel has more than 30 years of classroom experience. Prior to his current position, he served as head of school at First Montessori School of Atlanta. Located at 5750 Long Island Drive, FMSA is the Southeast's oldest Montessori School and serves the needs of students ages 18 months to 14 years.

Seidel earned a bachelor's degree in music performance from Illinois Wesleyan University and a master's degree in music performance from Yale University.

"My goal in teaching is to instill a lifelong love of music in children," Seidel said. "There are so many studies that confirm the benefits of learning to play a musical instrument. Since you're using both sides of your brain, you develop a skill that can help you in a lot of different ways."

According to Seidel, FMSA's approach to teaching music helps children develop their "ear," which benefits them when they're taking notes, spelling and learning foreign languages. "It's also a great facilitator in mathematics," he said.   "We'll have to wait and see if any of them make music a career," he explained. "But that's really not what this is about. Music helps make them more well-rounded individuals."

Joe Seidel and his wife, Charleen, live in Canton.
