Dunwoody High Instructor Named 2011 National Language Teacher of the Year

DUNWOODY, GA -- On Monday, Dec. 6, State School Superintendent Brad Bryant announced that Clarissa Adams Fletcher was named the 2011 National Language Teacher of the Year by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

Mrs. Adams Fletcher is an Advanced Placement and Level II Spanish teacher at Dunwoody High School.

"It's an honor to see Georgia's teachers being recognized for their continued passion and dedication to student learning," said Bryant. "Mrs. Adams Fletcher exemplifies the caliber of the teaching force we have in Georgia."

The award was created to recognize a foreign language teacher who exhibits excellence in language teaching.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) in partnership with Participant Media today hosted a Town Hall meeting to further community engagement in the ongoing conversation about the educational issues highlighted in the critically-acclaimed documentary, WAITING FOR “SUPERMAN.”  Community partners with top local and national education, business and government leaders agreed that community linkages are critical to solving America’s education crisis.

“Partnering for Change: The Role of the Community in Improving Education for All Children,” included compelling clips from the film and a discussion focusing on the importance of community involvement in working to provide every child a great education.

Moderated by Southeast Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League, Bill Nigut, the panel participants included; United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta President, Milton J.

Warm Hands, Warm Hearts: HIES Coat Drive

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The Holy Innocents' community -- parish and school -- is collecting new or gently used coats, blankets and mittens in November and December for those in need this holiday season.

Donations will benefit the Sandy Springs-Dunwoody Community Action Center, Church of the Common Ground, Gateway Center for the Homeless, and the mittens will help the Albert T. Mills Enrichment Center.

The Lower School has completed its drive, but Middle and Upper School students, faculty and staff can bring in blanket and coat donations during the weeks after Thanksgiving -- Monday, Nov. 29 through Friday, Dec. 10.

"These coats and blankets will help the good people of Gateway and the Community Action Center keep warm through what promises to be a cold winter," said Chaplain Timothy Black.

St. Jude the Apostle School Hosting Christmas Bazaar

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Mark your calendars for the St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School Christmas Bazaar.

The event will take place on Sunday, Nov. 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Jude (7171 Glenridge Drive NE, Atlanta, 30328). It's the perfect opportunity to get the holiday shopping done early.

A Saint Nicholas Brunch will be served until 1:00 p.m. There will also be artisans, jewelry, exhibitors, ornaments, crafts, a bake sale, a poinsettia sale and more.

GHA "Raises the Roof!" and Wins $100,000

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- Let the celebration begin!

Greenfield Hebrew Academy won the $100,000 grand prize in the Bing.com Our School Needs contest!

GHA's journey began with a rap video entry, "Raise the Roof," on Monday, Sept. 27 and ended victoriously when the last vote was counted late in the night on Sunday, Nov. 7.

In celebration, GHA is holding a schoolwide event on Friday, Nov. 12 at 2:00 p.m. and inviting all of Atlanta to join in the festivities.
