DINNERS ON A DIME: Atlanta Taquerias | Restaurants
ATLANTA, Ga. – This week, Dinners on a Dime features the best in local taquerias. Every Tuesday Where U Live chooses four favorite eats in your area for you to take your family and friends for a fabulous meal for a price that’s economically feasible in today’s economy.
Taqueria del Sol or TDS is known from their tacos, enchiladas, soups and chilies. The restaurant has four metro locations and they’re always pretty packed for the lunch crowd. Around the newsroom, the fish tacos and shrimp corn chowder reign supreme but TDS loyalists tend to be daring and like to try everything, at least, once. The restaurant also has a pretty impressive selection of tequila and beer. Check them out online or at their Westside, Decatur, Cheshire Bridge and Athens location.
Another popular restaurant, Verde Taqueria has been standing in the Brookhaven neighborhood since 2009. The restaurant was created on the basis of having fun, relaxing and being neighborhood friendly. The restaurant is pretty affordable and they offer thirteen different types of tacos, from buffalo tofu to grilled veggie. They also are famous for their organic and house margaritas. The restaurant is located at 1426 Dredsen Drive in Brookhaven and they plan on opening a new location on the Westside, soon.
PURE is another one of Atlanta’s most popular taquerias. Located in Inman Park, the restaurant boasts a patio and a good, cost-effective, time. All tacos are served with Mexican rice and your choice of frijoles negros, refritos or charros. PURE also serves burritos, taquitos, quesadillas and burittos. The restaurant serves more than ten margaritas and about twenty different varieties of beer. The restaurant has four locations in the metro area and they can all be accessed online.
Bad Dog Taqueria is a relatively new taco shop in the Emory Village. The taqueria recently opened and is pretty popular for their Korean BBQ taco “We’ve Got Seoul” which is made with pork belly, slaw and salsa and the "Snooki", which is basically a spaghetti taco. The restaurant offers about 10 tacos and an array of appetizers. The restaurant will debut the Vietnamese Shaking Filet taco on Friday. The restaurant is located at 1579 North Decatur Road in Atlanta.
Relatively new restaurant, Perla Taqueria, located on the corner of Piedmont and Piedmont Circle. Perla offers twelve different varieties of tacos from the grilled pork, tilapia, and beef tongue; tacos range from 1.99 to 2.99. They also offer salsas for 99 cent ranging from the tomatillo verde to the avocado, Ranchera and their smoked pepper buttermilk. Guests enjoy the restaurants sauce bar for allowing them to choose their own pico de gallo, sauces and sour cream. The restaurant is located at 1958 Piedmont Road in Atlanta.
LaFonda Latino is one of the oldest cantina styled restaurants in Atlanta. Along with tacos they serve enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos and enchiladas. Taco selections included your choice of tilapia or salmon and the restaurant also offer chicken or beef tacos. LaFonda offers dinners of either two or three tacos, all for under $10. And the restaurant is, generally, easy on your pocket offering only five meals priced over $10. Lafonda locations can be found online.
El Taco is a popular Tex-Mex dinner restaurant in the Virginia Highlands. The restaurant is open from 5-10 p.m. Monday through Friday and opens for lunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant offers eight variations of tacos from fish tacos to chili steak tacos. One of their most popular taco is the veggie taco which is made with squash, peppers, onion, black beans and queso. The restaurant is usually popular so call ahead for reservations. On the south side of town, the Taqueria La Oaxaquena is, pretty much, a hoot. Chicken, steak, goat, pork are the basis of most of this restaurant’s tacos however, they offer a number of preparations. All tacos are $2 and they, also, offer tamales, quesadillas, burritos and American fare. The restaurant was voted Best Mexican restaurant by Creative Loafing two years in a row and is popular for their homemade tortillas. The restaurant is located at 605 Mount Zion Road in Jonesboro.
On Buford Highway, known as the “Silk Road of Atlanta”, taco fanatics are going insane about the Michoacan Taco Shop. The shop offers tacos that come with a meat of your choice, tortillas, cilantro, onions and limes; these tacos are totally authentic. Tacos are about $1.75 and they come out being some of the cheapest in the metro area. The restaurant is located at 3328 Buford Highway in Atlanta.
Cheeky Taqueria is the “go-to” spot for taco lovers in the ‘burbs. The restaurant offers eleven different types of tacos ranging from the crab cake taco to the southern fried chicken taco. Cheeky tacos are served on flour tortillas but corn tortillas can be ordered, if your heart desires. The restaurant has two locations: one in Suwanee and one in Cumming. Check them out online.
Armando’s Caribe Restaurant offers the best of Latin cuisine for OTP crowds. They’re known for their daily lunch and dinner specials, which include a $7 lunch and a $10 dinner. The restaurant offers shrimp paella and “AH-MAY-ZING” lobster tacos. The restaurant has two locations, one in Duluth and the other in Alpharetta.
