All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) announces schedule of support groups and workshops

ATLANTA -- All About Developmental Disabilities (AADD) has announced its February 2014 schedule of events and workshops, an element of its Family Support Center (FSC), located at AADD’s offices in Decatur.

The FSC serves individuals and families living with developmental disabilities in metro Atlanta, offering assistance during difficult life transitions. Support groups are designed for moms, dads, siblings and entire families, providing information to make informed choices that build on their strengths.

“For people living with developmental disabilities, everyday life is full of challenges,” said Kathy Keeley, AADD’s executive director. “There are emotional, physical and financial issues. AADD’s support groups and workshops are designed to assist individuals with different perspectives navigate all of the challenges and obstacles.”

History center to hold architecture Lunch & Learn

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The DeKalb History Center will hold a Lunch & Learn with architectural historian Dr. Richard Cloues later this month.

Cloues will present his lecture, "After the Bungalow, Before the Ranch: The Small American House Phenomenon, 1920s-1950s" on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at noon.

He will speak in the Old Superior Courtroom at the Historic DeKalb Courthouse in downtown Decatur.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Attendees are permitted to bring lunch.

'Peter Pan and Wendy' coming to Marcus JCC

'Peter Pan and Wendy' coming to Marcus JCC

DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Synchronicity Performance Group will bring its production of Peter Pan and Wendy to Dunwoody this month.

The beloved family-friendly musical will play at the Marcus Jewish Community Center Atlanta.

It opens Thursday, Jan. 9 and ends its run on Sunday, Jan. 19.

Tickets for MJCCA members are $15 per adult and $12 per child. The cost for non-members is $22 for adults and $18 for children.

Cokie Roberts to hold book signings at Davis Academy

Cokie Roberts to hold book signings at Davis Academy

ATLANTA -- Celebrated journalist Cokie Roberts will hold a reading and book signing at the Alfred & Adele Davis Academy in February.

Roberts is the author of Founding Mothers: Ladies of Liberty, which highlights the female patriots of the American Revolution. She recently published a children's book of the same name.

The picture book version of Founding Mothers is illustrated by Caldecott Medal-winning artist Diane Goode. It features some key players in American history, including Abigail Adams, Martha Washington and Phillis Wheatley.

Roberts' talks and signings will be Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7 p.m.

The Davis Academy is located at 7901 Roberts Drive in Sandy Springs.

Look out for runners on Ga. 400

Look out for runners on Ga. 400

ATLANTA -- Don't be alarmed if you see a whole bunch of people running down Georgia 400 this weekend.

The Pay the Last Toll road race will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m., and gives athletes one last opportunity to see the infamous toll booths before they are demolished.

Runners will begin at the Glenridge Connector in Sandy Springs and run south to Phipps Plaza. When they reach the toll booths, they will throw in their final 50 cents. All proceeds will go to charity.

Northbound lanes of Ga. 400 will be closed for the race from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will also spend part of the weekend tearing down a MARTA pedestrian bridge on southbound Ga. 400.

DeKalb recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Day

DECATUR, Ga. -- Tuesday, Oct. 22 has been named Domestic Violence Awareness Day in DeKalb County.

DeKalb Solicitor-General Sherry Boston is passionate about ending domestic violence.

"I am pleased to see DeKalb County recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Day so that we can spread the word about this very serious problem," Boston said in a statement. "It's important that we stop the cycle of abuse that is often passed down from generation to generation."

Boston recently helped create a Special Victims Unit in DeKalb County. The police unit will investigate and prosecute domestic violence and stalking crimes.
