ATLANTA -- Many may not know the arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States.

About 50 million Americans, including one in four Georgians, are affected by this disease. According to some statistics, 74 percent of Georgians with arthritis are overweight or obese; nearly half of them are limited by it.

On Saturday, May 14, the Arthritis Foundation will hold its Atlanta Arthritis Walk to raise awareness for the disease, research and the best possible treatment: exercise.

Moving is an excellent way to treat arthritis. Exercise can even prevent some types of arthritis from occurring.

Registration for the walk on May 14 will begin at 9 a.m.; pre-registration can be completed online. The walk itself will begin at 10 a.m. at the Concourse Corporate Center (5 Concourse Parkway, Atlanta, 30338).

This is a family-friendly event; dogs and children are welcome to participate in the one- and three-mile courses.

Join the Let's Move Together Movement to spread the word about the walk, arthritis and the hope for a cure.
