Atlanta-Based Invesco Acts Locally For National Day of Service and Remembrance on Sept. 11

Employees of Global Firm Headquartered in Atlanta Find Meaningful Ways to Serve Their Hometown

ATLANTA, SEPT. 12, 2012 -- This year, employees at Invesco’s Atlanta office chose to commemorate the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance by giving back to the city they call home.  Employees participated in three service activities around Atlanta, including collecting cellphones for military servicemen, improving a local park and feeding the homeless.

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance to commemorate the 9/11 victims and survivors, and to honor those who rose up in service in response to the attacks.  It has become one of the largest days of charitable service in the U.S.

Invesco, Ltd, an independent investment firm headquartered in Atlanta, is committed to responsible corporate citizenship and encourages employees to play active roles in the growth and development of the communities in which they live and work. That commitment showed on September 11, as employees volunteered for several worthy causes in Atlanta. Organizers estimate about 75 percent of Invesco’s nearly 400 employees took part in the employee-organized efforts across all the activities offered.

Invesco employees’ good works included:

Park and Playground Upgrade

For some employees, volunteering meant donning work gloves and sunscreen to spend a sunny afternoon in Atlanta Memorial Park. Invesco worked with Park Pride, a nonprofit organization that works with communities all over Atlanta to improve their parks.  Employees spruced up benches, added paint to much needed water fountains and assembled and installed new park benches.

Feeding the Hungry

How many loaves of bread does it take to make 2,000 sandwiches? Some Invesco employees had the chance to find out when they offered to help feed the homeless. The assembly line they set up to make the 2,000 sandwiches (1,000 peanut butter and jelly 1,000 ham and cheese) went through almost 200 loaves of bread. The sandwiches went to Crossroads Community Ministries, which serves more than 4,500 homeless Atlantans a year.

Called into Action for Soldiers Overseas

Invesco set up collection points throughout their offices to collect used cell phones for “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” an organization that works to keep military families connected by providing free calling cards to those serving overseas. Invesco employees donated hundreds of cell phones, which will be recycled; the proceeds will fund many hours of talk time for U.S. soldiers (each phone = 2.5 hours)
