Business

DUNWOODY, Ga. -- Macy's Inc. will close the Bloomingdale's department store at Perimeter Mall in early spring 2012 "as part of the company's normal-course process to selectively prune underperforming locations."

The company announced the closure of the eight-year-old, 234,000-square-foot store Wednesday.

The closing will cut 128 jobs. Employees impacted by store closings may be offered positions in nearby stores where possible, Macy's said.

A final clearance sale starts Jan. 8 and will run for about 10 weeks.

In total, Macy's is closing five Macy's stores and four Bloomingdale's across the country as part of the restructuring. It will incur up to $30 million in costs for the fourth quarter of 2011 for the closures.

"We continue to be committed to maintaining a healthy portfolio of stores that allows us to focus on growth from our best and most productive locations," Terry J. Lundgren, Macy's chairman, president and CEO, said in a statement. "This requires us to make some difficult decisions to close stores that no longer meet our performance requirements, as well as to open stores where we see opportunity."

Bloomingdale's entered the Atlanta market in 2003. The stores at Lenox Square and Perimeter Mall were the first in Georgia for the upscale chain known for its unique merchandise, style and flair. The Lenox Square location will remain open.

Macy's also has 26 Macy's department stores in Georgia.
